The South Caucasus Regional Office of the Heinrich Boell Foundation hosted the first round of the workshops on Oral History methodology on April 11-12, 2014.

The event took place in frames of the Keep the History project planned in cooperation with the International Society Memorial. 14 researchers selected from Georgia for the project took part in the workshop. The event was led by three trainers from the International Society Memorial: Ms. Irina Shcherbakova (head of the educational programs of the International Society Memorial), Ms. Alena Kozlova (director of the archives of the International Society Memorial) and Ms. Irina Ostrovskaya (researcher at the Centre of Oral Histories of the International Society Memorial).

The first round of the series of workshops in frames of the Keep the History project was dedicated to discussion of essential theoretical and practical aspects of the oral history methodology. Participants were informed on origins of the term Oral Histories and were suggested to reflect on national and regional peculiarities of the given research tools. Issues related to historic, collective and cultural memory were also discussed. Problems in regards to history witness and trauma that are closely related to the totalitarian past of the XX century research and deliberation were also brought into discussion.

The participants of the workshop outlined research topics for themselves. They will apply the knowledge obtained at the workshop for studying specific issues of their interest during the year.

Next round of the workshop in frames of the Keep the History project is planned on June 19-20, 2014.
