Monitoring of Media Coverage
On December 21, 2011 presentation of interim reports concerning media monitoring was held at the South Caucasus Regional Office of the Heinrich Boell Foundation. The topic of the media monitoring was highlighting hate speech in print media.
The interim report was presented by Internews -Georgia, which is partner within the HBF SC project “Addressing Hate Speech in Georgia: A Litmus Test for Human Rights and Social Tolerance”. The aim of the monitoring is study of hate speech in Georgian print media, towards ethnic, religious and sexual minorities.
The project is financed by European Commission, in the framework of European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR).
During the presentation media researchers George Tabagari and Diana Chachua presented the reports of media monitoring done during May-July and September-November, 2011. George Shubitidze, the project coordinator at HBF Sc, represented the main goals of the project: Addressing hate Speech in Georgia: A Litmus Test for Human Rights and Social Tolerance. Oliver Reisner a project manager at Delegation of the European Union to Georgia had speech also in presentation.
Presentation was followed by discussion, which was moderated by Zviad Koridze head of board of Journalist ethic chertier. Representatives of NGOs, media means and public defender office actively participated in the discussion.
For media monitoring 8 national and 3 regional newspapers were selected and the media outlets will be same during the future media monitoring. The next report will be presented in a March 2012.
