Women’s Initiatives Supporting Group (WISG) is a feminist organization that aims to support the formation of a harmonious society based on principles of social justice by empowering LBTQI+ people. WISG aims to ensure the full involvement and equal participation of lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex individuals as well as other marginalized groups of women in Georgia’s social, political, cultural, and economic life.
According to studies conducted by WISG, the general public has become less hostile to the LGBTQI+ movement in 2016-2021 than before, and there are tendencies to dismantle legal restrictions. At the same time, however, there is still much resentment against LGBTQI+ people in society. In recent decades an anti-gender movement has strengthened, openly opposing the queer feminist movement and self-expression. Increasingly right-wing tendencies within the government additionally threaten achievements and progress in the field of gender equality.
With the support of Heinrich Boell Foundation South Caucasus – Tbilisi Office and Women’s Fund in Georgia, WISG holds a Feminist Forum to bring people together to discuss intersectional approaches to feminist movement in the Georgian and South Caucasus societies. The 2023 the Forum will focus on intersections of gender equality and education.
